Do you need a good film about sport for the classroom or for a rainy day activity? This filmography grew out of the editor's search for films suitable for use in the classroom that would enhance the teaching of university level sport history classes. Educators, recreation leaders, summer camp programmers, or other groups exploring the complex world of sport will find this filmography useful. Included are productions that treat historical, sociological, psychological, philosophical, and other themes about life manifested through sport. The filmography briefly describes the content of each film and video. In addition, each entry provides the applicable age range, from elementary school through adult; the chronological setting, from the ancient world to the present; availability in film or video format; availability in color or black and white; and production date, if known. With alphabetical, topical, biographical, and distributor indexes. Most of the films and videos listed are available at no charge except handling costs. A word about what this filmography is not: it is not a collection of commercial Hollywood features or "how to do it" productions. It is a collection of films and videos that have educational applications in a limitless number of settings. This list of more than 1,400 films and videos grew out of the compiler's search for materials suitable for her sports-history class at the University of Iowa. Not included are how-to-do-it films and Hollywood productions with a sports theme. Films are listed by title, with a brief description and note on the time period in which they are set, running time, format, appropriate audience (from elementary school through adult), and distributor. There is a list of distributors with addresses and phone numbers, a name index that lists athletes who are the subjects of films, and a topic index. This last index includes such subjects as Afro-Americans and Sport , Psychological Aspects of Sport , and Sport in Germany , but also lists more than 100 sports as subjects. Along with many films on the Olympics, baseball, and boxing, one can find titles on badminton, cricket, and sumo wrestling. Unfortunately, there are far more 16mm films listed here than videos. Since some of the films date back to the 1950s and 1960s, they undoubtedly are no longer available from their distributors. Recommended only for sports history collections. How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
