"Love must act, as light must shine and fire must burn." The Reverend James Otis Sargent Huntington not only wrote those words but lived by them. Father Huntington founded the Order of the Holy Cross (OHC), an Episcopal monastic community begun in the late nineteenth century in the United States. The founding of St. Andrew's School in 1905 on the Cumberland Plateau in southeastern Tennessee by this order of monks provides an outstanding example to all who know the history of the school of how "love must act." The Rev. William S. Wade, an Episcopal priest and educator, became the first Head at St. Andrew's-Sewanee School, the result of the merger of The Sewanee Academy and St. Andrew's School in 1981. Working almost three decades with alumni and supporters who had known the earlier St. Andrew's, Wade felt compelled to write this book. Placing the opening of the book in the context of education (and its limitations) in the United States in the early twentieth century ensures its contents will be more than a mere chronology. Wade has also brought in the voices of St. Andrew’s School’s Order of Holy Cross leadership through the decades: Bishop Robert E. Campbell, Father Bonnell Spencer, Prior Julien Gunn. Their observations bring those decades of the first 60 years of the school into sharp focus. In doing so,Wade succeeds in relating how changes in the Episcopal church and American culture affected the relationship of the OHC to its school and the school to its students. And in the final part of the book, he does not shy away from the difficulties faced by the school after the monks departed. One might say Wade's work to bring this school's story to a wider audience is another example of how "love must act" and those who read the pages here may come away feeling enlightened, certainly amazed at what actions love can accomplish, and perhaps in agreement with his thesis that St. Andrew's School was not just another school.
