She grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Agoura, California. She has a BA in English literature from California State University, an MFA in poetry from Columbia University, and an MSW from Portland State University. She has worked as a children's book editor, an English teacher, and an independent bookseller, and social worker.
