Luke Strange, fourteen years old, has just lost his father to a mysterious animal attack. An attack by an unknown animal that also left his mother maimed and missing. His miserable and oppressive aunt (who now has custody of him) implies that his mother is dead and gone. Luke somehow knows otherwise. After a funeral for his father that his aunt will let none of his friends attend, Luke decides to run away to this parent's remote cabin in the Adirondacks. Strange things start happening now that he is at the lonely camp -beginning with a cat that has somehow followed him for hundreds of miles as he hitchhiked. And there are the always half-glimpsed movements in the shadows of the cabin. In the isolated cabin in the woodlands of northern New York, Luke dreams that his father speaks to him, asking him to find his private, handwritten journal. With the help of the precocious cat, Luke looks for the hidden journal. A horrendous storm rages about the cabin...and Luke's adventure begins.
