“Absolutely enthralling and genuinely terrifying.” —Kit Frick, author of I Killed Zoe Spanos and Very Bad People I Know What You Did Last Summer meets The Haunting of Hill House in this “psychologically chilling and unforgettable” ( Kirkus Reviews ) teen thriller following an estranged group of friends being haunted by their friend who died last summer. Emily Joiner was once part of an inseparable group—she was a sister, a best friend, a lover, and a rival. Summers without Emily were unthinkable. Until the fire burned the lake house to ashes with her inside. A year later, it’s in Emily’s honor that Chelsea and her four friends decide to return. The house awaits them, meticulously rebuilt. Only, Chelsea is haunted by ghostly visions. Loner Ryan stirs up old hurts and forces golden boy Chase to play peacemaker. Which has perfect hostess Kennedy on edge as eerie events culminate in a stunning accusation: Emily’s death wasn’t an accident. And all the clues needed to find the person responsible are right here. As old betrayals rise to the surface, Chelsea and her friends have one night to unravel a mystery spanning three summers before a killer among them exacts their revenge. Gr 9 Up-Chelsea, Ryan, Chase, and Mila arrive at Kennedy's family lake house one year after the date of Emily's death. On that day, the house burned to the ground with Emily trapped in the attic, but Kennedy's family has just finished rebuilding an exact replica on the very spot where the old one stood. Most of the group has summered at the lake house for the past 10 years, so there are lots of old and new grudges, relationship drama, and friend fights that need to be navigated. When a set of tarot cards that clearly represent each of the teens start creepily appearing around the house, and a game of Truth or Dare gets really scary, the group starts to wonder if Emily is haunting them, and why. Narrated in turn by Chelsea, Kennedy, and Emily, as each voice takes over, new clues are slowly revealed. The atmosphere is where this novel shines, as there is clearly something wrong that readers can't quite make out. Unfortunately, characterization isn't as strong as other aspects of the writing, so keeping up with who is talking and when gets confusing as the story twists and turns. Some of this is probably purposeful, and it all makes sense just a few pages from the end, but it might take a patient reader to get there. All characters are presumed white; Kennedy and Chelsea are in a relationship. VERDICT Thrillers are always in demand, and this one should mostly satisfy that die-hard crowd.-Mandy Laferriereα(c) Copyright 2011. Chapter 1 SUMMER OF EGRETS Present Chelsea 1 The lake house hasn’t changed in the ninety-one years of its distinguished existence. Solid, stately, a relic of the Rockefeller and Durant era, it has survived three hurricanes, countless termite infestations, and a flood. It’s survived death itself. A bold claim if you can make it, but in this case, it happens to be true. Last summer, it burned to ashes with Emily Joiner trapped inside, and it was simply resurrected in its own image by its benefactors. It’s indestructible. Impervious to death and all that nature and beyond can summon. I’ve always thought of the lake house as a special place, but as I stare up at it, risen from ruin a year after its demise, the word that comes to mind is miraculous . Has it really been a year? To the day. I pull the stiff, custom-made postcard from the pocket of my faded army-green capris, a pair that Emily designed herself. On the front of the
