Sunshine the cat is angry at her close friend Storm, a dog, when he gets her all wet after going out in the rain, and Storm's feelings are hurt by Sunshine's anger. reS-Gr 2-Two best friends have a falling out when Storm, a dog, rudely and unthinkingly shakes himself dry and sprays water all over Sunshine, a cat. Storm is heartbroken and realizes the error of his ways. Sunshine is contrite but wary; but when her pal apologetically licks her, she forgives him and returns the affection. Both learn the value of true friendship. The outstanding artwork reinforces the emotions expressed in the text. Placed on stark, white spreads, the bright orange cat and black dog look like Rorschach test pictures. There is little else on the pages except a green line for the grass, blue swirls for water, and the bright sun and a cloud. When Storm shakes, he has four tongues and extra appendages. When Sunshine gets angry, she literally flies apart. The large bold lettering is well suited to the action. The story and pictures are perfect for group or individual sharing. Marlene Gawron, Orange County Library, Orlando, FL Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc. Ages 3-5. Sunshine is a feisty orange cat and Storm is a rambunctious black dog. The animals are best friends until the day Storm goes out to play in the rain. Upon his return, he shakes himself dry, forgetting that Sunshine doesn't like water. Sunshine is very wet and very angry. It ruins the friendship for a while, but after some reflection (figurative as well as literally, as they gaze at their reflections in a puddle) they make up. The story is basic, but the artwork is imaginative. Coplestone's watercolors are loose, bright splotches of color that form a cat, a dog, or a cloud with equal vigor. It's fun to see how expressive the pictures can be as they encompass elements of the abstract. Short enough to hold young children's attention, this is a good choice for story hours.
