Percy Freeman was born in a house on a dirt road in Juliette, Georgia. His mother was sixteen at his birth. Three years and ten months later, she would depart from this earth due to burns from a house fire. Percy did not identify his father until October 2022 and learned his father died eighteen days before his mother. His father, Percy Heulett, was murdered in Chattanooga, TN in 1960. Percy was raised by his grandmother and step-grandfather until he ran away from home at age sixteen. He succeeded despite living in poverty and not having educated grandparents or anyone to assist or support him with schoolwork at home. After leaving his grandparents' house, he lived with friends and relatives until he graduated from high school in 1974. During his first sixteen years, he lived in homes without indoor plumbing. Fireplaces, wood-burning stoves heated the rented family home up to age 16. After high school graduation, he joined the United States Air Force and served as a Missile Systems Specialist and Technician for five years. He played semi-professional football for two years in the Northern Italian Football League (NIFL). After leaving active duty, Percy joined the Georgia Air National Guard (GA ANG) and served for another 27 years. During his journey, he earned a bachelor's and two associate degrees. He was self-employed as a Private Investigator, Police Officer/Investigator, Fulton County District Attorney Investigator, and Special Agent/Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He retired from the GA ANG as a Chief Master Sergeant, previously serving as First Sergeant, Munitions Inspector, Human Resources Advisor, and Mentor. He received numerous awards from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Air Force (Air Guard), Dekalb County Police as a Neighborhood Watch Coordinator, and Letters of Appreciation from Judges and Police Administrators. He was nationally recognized by the National Guard Bureau and the State of Georgia for his contributions in Diversity Education, Recruiting, Retention, and Mentoring military personnel. Percy has researched family history for over thirty years and has connected families, specifically DNA-connected families seeking to find their father. In 2003, he created a PowerPoint presentation named Finding Your Roots to teach others how to find their roots. Since then, he has completed three extensive family history books. Despite the numerous challenges, barriers, and discrimination he faced, Percy always maintained a cheerful outlook on life. His resilience and determination to continuously improve his life are truly inspiring. His positive attitude is evident in his love for travel, having visited all 50 states and 45 countries. His story is a reminder that a positive outlook can help overcome even the most daunting obstacles.
