The Boston Red Sox are one of the storied sports franchises in North America. Steeped in tradition, they represent a veritable treasure trove of baseball lore. From the earliest days of a promising young pitcher named Babe Ruth, through the glory years of Foxx, Williams, and Yastrzemski, to the present era of superstars such as Garciaparra and Martinez, the Red Sox epitomize all that is grand about the grand old game. But it isn’t just the superstars who make this team unique. Over the years they’ve been blessed with some of the most colorful and engaging characters ever to don a major league uniform–Bill "Spaceman" Lee, Dick "Dr. Strangeglove" Stuart, and Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd, to name just a few. Tales from the Red Sox Dugout captures the flavor and atmosphere of the Red Sox dugout–the situations, anecdotes, and atmosphere that define the Red Sox. So whether you’re a diehard Bosox supporter or just a baseball fan, you’ll find this book as irresistible as a sunny afternoon doubleheader at Fenway. The lore of two storied franchises that haven't won a championship in the lifetimes of most readers is addressed in these volumes. Both teams have a wide and devoted following. These books make for light and breezy reading as they are basically compilations of anecdotes, some off-color, and odd facts about the greats and lesser-known players. Arranged alphabetically by last name, the anecdotes are separated and bordered by graphics of baseballs. Some illustrations of players also appear throughout. The humor of the books should appeal to young adults as well as their parents. The anecdotes strive to be insightful, though some readers might consider the stories to be bland at best. These books are optional purchases that regional libraries may consider. [The Red Sox's last World Series championship came at the expense of the even more starcrossed Cubs, in 1918.DEd.].DPaul Kaplan, Lake Villa Dist. Lib., I. -.DPaul Kaplan, Lake Villa Dist. Born in 1948, the year the Red Sox staged a late season rally to tie the Cleveland Indians for first place in the American League only to lose a one-game playoff, Jim Prime has been a long-suffering Red Sox fan all his life. He is the co-author, along with baseball legend Ted Williams, of Ted Williams Hit List, and the co-author, with Bill Nowlin and Mike Ross, of Fenway Saved, which USA Today’s Baseball Weekly enthused, is "the purest visual record of the Red Sox’s 20th century home."
