Influential American celebrity photographer, director and creative director Matthew Rolston turns his eye for portraiture to a new cast of characters with the launch of Talking Heads, The Vent Haven Portraits. Using techniques he has honed over decades of celebrity portraiture, and marking his first foray into the world of fine arts, Rolston has captured the inherent humanity of a rarely-seen collection of unique entertainment figures: ventriloquist dummies. Unearthed from the intimate and obscure Vent Haven Museum in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, Rolston used a rigorously formal photographic approach to bring out the power in the faces of these figures through a series of 100 portraits, or "headshots". Rolston painstakingly selected the faces he was most drawn to and, in particular, those that conveyed a sense of character through pronounced aging, exaggerated features, and ornately painted faces, drawing the eye directly to the sometimes disturbingly human quality of each dummy. Breathing new life into these inanimate figures, Rolston's photographs channel a sustained and energetic presence that is at once commanding, totemic, and touchingly familiar. The lush photography book turns Rolston's camera lens on a collection of dummies unearthed at the Vent Haven Museum in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. Matthew Rolston, who typically photographs celebrities and music stars like: Jessica Simpson, Zac Efron, Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Adam Levine, Oprah, Kelly Osbourne and Michael Jackson, employed a formal portrait approach to capturing the dolls characterizations in more than 100 images over 224 pages. Well known for his influential lighting techniques and unique approach to art direction and design, photographer and director Matthew Rolston has been strongly identified throughout his career with the revival and modern expression of Hollywood glamour. Rolston was discovered by Andy Warhol for Warhol's groundbreaking Interview Magazine , where he began a successful career in photography. Soon after he began shooting covers and unique editorial assignments for founding editor Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone . Shortly, other prominent publications began to recognize Rolston's work, such as Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Vanity Fair, W, GQ, Esquire, O, the Oprah Magazine and The New York Times Magazine . Deciding to extend his vision beyond still photography into the moving image, Rolston began conceiving, writing and directing music videos and television commercials for such diverse clients as Madonna, Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé Knowles, L'Oreal, Revlon, Esteé Lauder, Clairol, Pantene, Elizabeth Arden, Gap, and Polo Ralph Lauren, among many others. Once again redefining and expanding the scope of his vision, Rolston has now begun to move into the areas of fine arts, experiential design (including hospitality), product design, and new media ventures.
