In this delightfully inspiring novel written in the summer of 2021, Ken Ivy tells his favorite stories from nearly five decades coaching high school athletics. Legendary coaches as well as famous athletes from Ken’s 49-year career weigh in with commentary and in many cases add tales of their own! Even if you’re completely unfamiliar with Louisiana sports and just want a feel-good novel to enjoy – That’s All Life Is, Is Stories is a must-read. In June of 2021, former players from three Southwood High School football teams from the early 1980's got together to help celebrate Coach Ken Ivy's 83rd birthday. He gave a rousing speech then the guys took turns sharing memories from back in the day. At one point, Coach smiled and said, "My wife and daughter have been telling me for years I oughta write down all my stories." That's how this project began. Coach Ivy put pen to paper and wrote each of the tales you're about to read. He called them "articles" and all thirty-four were written in black ink, in capital letters, on loose-leaf notebook paper. When done, there wasn't enough material for a full-length novel so an idea arose to seek out the many famous people mentioned in his stories. When this was proposed, Coach merely asked, "Would you like their phone numbers?" Though retired since 2009 and despite having coached teams in five different decades and at multiple schools, he had stayed in touch with almost everyone named in the text. For that matter; those for whom he did not have contact information were easy to track down. Many chapters begin with a direct quote from the celebrity later mentioned. Not always. Some chapters reference people already deceased or impossible to find. In those instances an Editor’s Note follows. In the interest of authenticity, each celebrity was invited to write or dictate whatever they wanted, whatever they believed should be included; however much they felt like contributing. They could correct facts, add details, or if they wished, tell stories of their own. Many did! It was astounding how some of the most celebrated athletes and coaches in the history of Louisiana sports dropped what they were doing and either spoke on the phone or replied by Email. And it was not just NFL quarterbacks or legendary coaches or members of some college's hall of fame. People who became extremely successful in other professions came up during Coach Ivy's stories and when reached they were thrilled to be a part of this. Why they would do so is a testament to the man responsible for this novel. That being said, he’d be first to tell you: it's not about him. It was never about him. What he wanted originally was to write down all his stories so that his kids and grandkids could read and enjoy them after he was gone. And yet, when people found out, it turned into something far bigger. It quickly became a community effort.
