"The ocean's a wonderful place to be." But what would happen if that weren't so? Read an entertaining rhyming story to your children and grandchildren while teaching a lesson to aid our wildlife and environment. Curious young Pete must learn to fly, fish, and never give up in this delightful journey into the world of nature. Preening for Flight is the second book in the fascinating Adventures of Pelican Pete series. Endorsed by educators and wildlife experts, the rhyming picture book is a means to help educate young children (and those who read to them) on ways to aid our wildlife and environment in an entertaining format. Vivid full color illustrations, flowing narrative, and accurate information make this book popular with children, parents, and educators alike. A "Did You Know?" page of facts follows the story to foster further discussions, and the "To Learn More" page lists resources for additional information. Our mission is to help protect earth's natural beauty, habitats, and wildlife for continuing generations by helping children to know and understand the natural world around them, to enjoy and appreciate its workings, and thereby to create a desire to protect it. The series of Pelican Pete books has received the following Awards and Honors: International Reading Association's Children's Choices; Teachers' Choice; Mom's Choice; iParenting Media Award Best Product-Children's Books; Book of the Year for Environment Education; and the Florida Publishers Association Best Children's Fiction and Best Florida Title. The books are also included in the Accelerated Reader and Scholastic's Reading Counts programs throughout the country. Illustrator : Hugh Keiser, a graduate of Cooper Union, has been painting and drawing for over 40 years. Included in numerous public and private collections, his work is the recipient of many awards. Hugh began to explore the computer as an art medium about the same time he and Frances moved to Florida and fell in love with the brown pelican: the clown prince of birds. Illustrations for a series of books featuring Pelican Pete are the result. Author : Frances Keiser, naturalist, wildlife rescue volunteer, and friend to animals and children, has worked for the public school system with preschoolers and conducted children's craft workshops. Raised on fairy tales, Frances continues to develop her love of children's books by being a collector and avid reader to children. Many of her favorite stories are in rhyme, which influenced her to write her own books in verse. Living on the beach near St. Augustine, Florida, the Keiser's home is aptly named "Pelican Perch."
