Can you quote the Apostles Creed by heart? How about your friends? Your children? Why would you even WANT TO? Here's an interesting fact: according to some people you can literally tell if people know their catechism (including the Apostles Creed of course) by the WAY THEY CARRY THEMSELVES? Had you ever heard that? Some swear that's true and, frankly I wouldn't be surprised. When Martin Luther wanted his to answer the question "What does God want us to believe?" and "What must I know to be forgiven?" He could think of no better answer than "The Apostles Creed"! For Luther it proclaimed the gace and love of God in the most accessible but beautiful way. Meditation on the Creed and Luther's explanation of it on a regular basis fills our hearts with the love, joy and peace of Christ... if we regularly bring those words to mind for our meditation. Of course we all know how RARE that is! How can we better learn and focus on the Apostles Creed and its profound meaning? In my pastoral ministry I've found that while many people can remember the Lord's Prayer (if only because they learned it when playing football in school - no joke), and some can remember some of the Ten Commandments, getting the Apostles Creed right and especially the meaning of each section can be a challenge. And if you can't REMEMBER THEM... you're not going to MEDITATE ON THEM or USE THEM TO GUIDE YOUR PRAYER. They'll never bring you Christ's peace that way! The question of course is what can be done about that? That's when I decided to try to MAKE MEDIDTATION ON THE APOSTLES CREED FUN.... simple little GAMES that help adults or kids jump start their ability to master the Creed and explanation in Luther's Small Catechism. I've found that if learning (especially for adults) isn't FUN, it's probably not going to happen unless some merciless task master is standing over people. But when that happens, they won't come back a second time! These games and activities let you engage the ten commandments in a way that that's interesting. It's not like a boring classroom. It's like an adventure... something fun to master! - Kids (and adults) need a break from the lecture. This kind of break lets them review, learn the material from different perspectives, and keep immersing themselves in the study of the ten commandments while making it a "game". - Listen our goal is to have students take the ten commandmetns with them ... to inspire their prayers, to equip them in times of struggle, to be the kind of biblical summary that the Holy Spirit uses in their lives to live faithfully in the world around them. If we believe the Creed as part of catechism give our students an advantage over people who never learn them, we owe it to ourselves and our students to do everything possible to help them make it their own! The tool to help you do that is: The Apostles Creed from Martin Luther's Small Catechism: Word Search & Activity Book!
