Doris Humphrey is one of the founders of American modern dance. Together With Charles Weidman she formed the Humphrey Weidman Dance Company to present each others' choreography (1929-1943 Upon retiring from performing she became Artistic Director for the Jose Limon Dance Company until her death. She has taught at The Juilliard School and the Bennington College Summer School of Dance. As Director of the Dance Program at New York's 92nd Street YMHA, she taught an annual course on choreography.
