The Rule’s rhythms―prayer, Scripture, labor, and care for the vulnerable―are presented not as harsh burdens but as a “school for the Lord’s service,” shaping a life of joy, peace, and durable faith. Saint Benedict of Nursia (c. 480–547) is honored as the father of Western monasticism. Born in central Italy, he left his studies in Rome to seek God in solitude near Subiaco. His holiness and practical wisdom drew followers, eventually leading him to found a monastery at Monte Cassino. There, he wrote the Rule of Saint Benedict, a balanced guide shaping prayer, work, humility, and communal life.
