About catnip:

Scientifically known as Nepeta cataria, catnip is a member of the Lamiaceae (mint) family. It originated in regions of Asia, Africa, and Europe but now grows worldwide. The oil in catnip, Nepetalactone, is found in the stems and leaves of the plant. This oil is what causes the reaction observed in cats. When they inhale the oil, nasal cavity receptors on their sensory neurons, activate an area in the brain that controls their behavior and emotions. Cats react differently to catnip, causing some to roll around in it while others lick or eat it. It can cause your cat to meow and run around wildly or even sedate them and send them off for a nap.
