The Classic of Mountains and Seas is a mini-encyclopedia in pre-Qin classics that contains a variety of materials such as history, mythology, religion, astronomy, geography, folk customs, ethnic groups, products, and medicine. It can also be regarded as the oldest geographical and cultural record. Since ancient times, it has been regarded as a remarkable book. It transcends the limitations of time and space, recording miraculous figures, strange beasts, gardens within the territory, overseas fairy mountains, and rare treasures... Vividly presenting a series of magical pictures of ancient life. One of the most important values of The Classic of Mountains and Seas lies in that it preserves a large number of mythological legends. Apart from the well-known "Yu the Great Controls the Flood", "Kua Fu Chases the Sun", and "The Jingwei Bird Fills the Sea", there is also a lot of content that is unfamiliar to most people, such as the rituals of mountain sacrifices and the legend of the battle between Huangdi and Chi You. These legends provide extremely precious historical materials for our study of ancient religions and wars between tribes. The book records all kinds of fantastic ideas and world wonders, which is a treasure trove for later and even today's writers and artists to obtain creative inspiration. More than a thousand years ago, Tao Yuanming regarded reading The Classic of Mountains and Seas as a spiritual enjoyment. He said that sitting quietly under the south window between spring and summer, "skimming through The Biography of King Mu of Zhou and browsing the pictures in The Classic of Mountains and Seas" was a great pleasure in life. The Classic of Mountains and Seas consists of 18 volumes. The content of the whole book can be divided into groups: a group of 5 volumes of The Five Mountains Classics and 4 volumes of The Overseas Classics, a group of 4 volumes of The Inner Seas Classics, and another group of 4 volumes of The Great Wilderness Classics and 1 volume of The Inner Seas Classics at the end of the book. The organizational structure of each group has its own beginning and end, is coherent from beginning to end, and has clear outlines. The Mountains Classics take mountains as the outline, dividing into five mountain systems of the south, west, north, east, and middle. With roads and directions as longitude and latitude, it methodically describes the geographical location, orientation of each mountain, as well as the trees and products in the mountains. It records in detail the distribution of mineral resources, and elaborates on their colors, lusters, hardness, etc. It also records the forms and medicinal values of various animals and plants. When describing rivers, it explains their sources, flows, and the distribution of main water systems and tributaries. This book records things according to regions. Most of the things recorded start from the south, then go west, then north, and finally reach the middle of the continent (Nine Provinces). Surrounding the Nine Provinces are the East Sea, the West Sea, the South Sea, and the North Sea.
