The story takes place in the middle of the World War Two period starting in September 1943 in a place now known as "Lost Cove" just outside of a small Tennessee town by the name of Hamilton deep inside the Great Smokey Mountains. Margaret Fay Kidwell and Anna Marie Carter, daughters of lumbermen living in Lost Cove had decided to make some changes in their lives by leaving the Cove in search of employment in Baltimore, Maryland with the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company to help with the War effort. Hamilton, Tennessee didn't have very much to offer young people as far as employment was concerned so most of them drifted off to other locations. Neither of these two girls wished to become housewives raising children and to be stuck in the Cove for the rest of their lives. Anna Marie had read an article in a newspaper she found giving details of employment in Baltimore. She begged and pleaded with her dearest friend Margaret Fay about leaving, telling her since Jeb, her boyfriend and a tobacco farmer that had been drafted into the Army and was serving overseas and her boyfriend Jim had been killed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 it was their patriotic duty as citizens to do what they could to help with the war effort. With very little money and a lot of nerve these two young, inexperienced country girls from Tennessee left the Cove for Baltimore not knowing if they would be hired to work, if they could find a place to live or if they would even get there. With a lot of determination, their life long friendship and lady luck riding on their shoulders they started a new life for themselves. With the help from newfound friends they were able to achieve what would turn out to be a very interesting and exciting adventure. ISBN: 978-1-4490-4954-6 Chapter One Fall was in the air through out the Great Smokey Mountains including the Cove. September is the time of year that Mother Nature begins to change. Her dress of green that she wore all summer is beginning to show a few different colors, such as bright reds and yellows on the maples and beautiful golden colors on the poplars. The mighty red and white oaks were still green but showing some fading here and there. The acorns were beginning to drop from the oaks, which meant it would be gathering time for the squirrels working hard to store up for the coming winter and extra food for the deer and especially the bear as their hibernation period would start soon and they needed all the fat they could store up to keep them through the winter months. None of the leaves had begun to fall except for the dogwood and black walnut, but it wouldn't be long until the ground would take on a blanket of many colors and the air would be nippy early in the mornings. This was a country of four seasons and everyone that lived in the area expected these changes and looked forward to them, even the winters which sometimes was mild and sometimes harsh but everyone looked forward to each change be it spring, summer, fall or winter and prepared themselves, as each season would mean different tasks would have to be completed for that particular season. October would be coming soon and that would mean that even more tasks would have to be carried out for the coming winter. Margaret Fay Kidwell and Anna Marie Carter had lived in the Cove since they were children attending both elementary and high school in the Willow Creek Community outside of Hamilton, Tennessee. After graduating from high school they had remained in the Cove living with their parents doing housework and other chores, which was the normal thing to do for two girls their ages. Margaret Fay's mother had died and running the house for her father, brother and two sisters was a full time job. Her high school sweetheart, Jeb Wilson who lived on a tobacco farm with his father, mother, sister and grandfather had been drafted into the Army and was overseas, exactly where she did not know, as she had not heard from him for some time. When Margaret Fay had a little extra time on her hands, which wasn't very often, she would sit in one of the rocking chairs on her dad's front porch and think about the good times she and Jeb had before he left. Anna Marie's secrete boyfriend Jim Williams was a logger who came from Alabama at the very beginning with Anna's father to help establish the little settlement in the Cove. He too had been drafted into the Army and was stationed at Schofield Barracks at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and was killed in action when the Japanese struck there Sunday morning, December 7, 1941. Since there was not much of a future for two young girls in a logging camp other than keeping house, cooking, sewing and other odd jobs, nor in the small town of Hamilton since there were no manufacturing plants, knitting mills or any other means of employment the only thing le
