The Cost of Your Heritage is a study of Georgetown, Iowa, and of St. Patrick’s Church, from its early days to the closing of the school. A combination of reminiscence, anecdote, and history, the book includes the text of several manuscripts which have never before been published. Georgetown was settled by Irish immigrants who centered their community around St. Patrick’s Church, built in the 1860s from limestone they hand-quarried and dragged to the site. More than 150 years later, the church, the stories, and the indomitable spirit of the Georgetown people remain.
