Combining an historical account of the discoveries of each blood groups with up to date clinical data. Extended interviews with predomi- nant physicians in the field, bringing in vivid accounts of the discovery moments. Richly presented figures, tables, illustrations, including historical illustrations and figures. I like the sound scholarship and the approach very much. And it is very entertaining. It is a must for the bookshelf of every blood bank. A superb and beautiful book. --John Gorman, MD, Lasker Award 1980 I have just finished reading my advance copy of The Discovery and Significance of the Blood Groups. I am glowing with excitement and satisfaction. It s a unique volume of history and science. The authors have elucidated the importance of many historical discoveries in terms of our contemporary understanding of the role of blood groups in health and disease. I have often thought of what should be the first assignment for a new trainee in blood banking and transfusion medicine. From today forward, I will assign this volume as the first assignment. It will be my way of conveying to them the breath of the discipline of blood banking, as well as infusing them with the excitement of scientific discovery which the authors convey so effectively on every page. All of us who train technologists, students and physicians in blood banking are grateful to the authors for providing us with a volume that explains not only the scientific basis of blood groups, but also the fascinating journey of how the discipline of blood banking evolved from basic serology to the cutting edge of molecular science. --Gerald Sandler, MD, Professor of Medicine and Pathology Director, Transfusion Medicine Georgetown University Hospital A recently published new book The discovery and Significance of the Blood Groups can serve as a great teaching/ learning tool for the history of immunohematology/ blood banking. This book is filled with inspiration and innovation. I highly recommended this book to our pathology residents. --Ding Wen Wu, MD, Mt.
