Ellen Moore Johnson is a designer, writer, and teacher that specializes in plain and fancy needlework, with an emphasis on surface embroidery. She began her adventure in the needle arts at the ripe old age of seven under the tutelage of her grandmothers. (Her first project was a dime store dresser scarf that she proudly embellished with harvest gold embroidery floss!) A former needlework shop owner, Ellen brings more than fifteen years of teaching experience to her students. Her articles have appeared in numerous publications, and she is an advocate for the preservation and perpetuation of needlework as a fine art through her memberships in a variety of guilds and associations. Ellen currently lives with her family in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She considers herself incredibly blessed to have been able to pursue her lifelong hobby as a career. Introduction: It seems we ve always been searching for new ways to bring style to living quarters. Our fascination with transforming an ordinary into a unique personal oasis can be traced all the way back to the ancient Egyptians, the first civilization known to have embellished hand-woven linen fabrics with embroidery. The desire for beautiful surroundings remains deeply embedded in our consciousness today. It is our goal to help you in your quest to create a comfortable and cozy place to live, to help you turn your dwelling into a true home. Have you ever thought about the factors that govern the manner in which you decorate your home? Your family, your age, your career, your friends, even your hobbies all of these things, and more influence the decisions you make about your home s furnishings and overall decor. Many different styles result from the merging of our diverse backgrounds, but one simple common thread continues to tie us all together: We all love to create, to make things with our hands. Perhaps you re yearning to decorate a box with beautiful stitchery. Maybe memories of cooking and chatting with Mom in the kitchen have sparked a desire to embroider a tablecloth. Whether you embroider a gift of elegant linen bed sheets to help a young couple set up housekeeping or you whip up a whimsical shower curtain for your daughter s first apartment, you are adding beauty and inspiration to the lives of those you love. The needlework you create today will be passed down to future generations and become cherished possessions that tie together a family s history. Cherished treasures that bring happiness. Heirlooms. We invite you to join us as we embark upon our tour of The Embroidered Home. It doesn t matter whether you re a novice needle worker, a veteran stitcher, or someone who tried her hand at embroidery once upon a time but who hasn t picked up a needle in many years.
