The Evolution of German Military Aircraft Volume 2. Rebirth of the Luftwaffe (1946-2029) Printed in Full COLOUR all with color CUTAWAY drawings. There were no “West German aircraft” between 1946 and 1949. Following the end of WWII in May 1945, the country was completely demilitarized by the Allied powers. The Wehrmacht (including the Luftwaffe ) was officially dissolved in August 1946, though it had effectively ceased to exist in May 1945. Therefore, the only military aircraft operated in that time period were the Allies. Allied Control Council regulations strictly prohibited Germany from manufacturing or operating any aircraft (military or civil). Germans were even forbidden from building or flying gliders during these years. The Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) was not founded until May 23, 1949. Even after its founding, it was not permitted to have armed forces. West German military aviation did not return until 1955-1956 , after the formation of the Bundeswehr and its acceptance into NATO. By 1957, things were beginning to change rapidly. The Dornier Do 27 single-engine STOL utility aircraft was notable for being the first mass-produced aircraft in Germany following the end of the Second World War. The Fouga CM.170 Magister two-seat jet trainer became the first aircraft to be licensed-built in West Germany by the revived Messerschmitt and Heinkel companies, restarting the domestic industry. The rest is history.
