Cox Editor-in-Chief Midwest Book Review 278 Orchard Drive Oregon, WI, 53575, USA In writing "The Fable of the Snake Named Slim" for kindergarteners through second graders, it was important to me to communicate sophisticated concepts using oneor two syllable words typically common for students in fourth and fifth grades. For example, words like "chide" and "snide" are better understood through the context of the surrounding text and the accompanying illustrations. Knowing the exact meanings of words in the story can help a child understand what he or she may be feeling in an uncomfortable situation or environment where confidence and action may be required. Chide means to "express disapproval". Snide means to "disparage, mock, taunt or to be mean" among many meanings. These meanings can become part of a larger discussion by parents and teachers about acceptance, self-worth and how others act in unkind ways. Ultimately, the protagonist, Slim, realizes that his ability to wobble versus his desire to wiggle like his friends, is truly his gift. The moral of the fable is found in these lines, "He could move boulders with unseen shoulders and he could do it when it really counted."Children recognize that snakes don't have shoulders so there is something within an individual that helps to take action and to make tough decisions when it really matters."The Fable of the Snake Named Slim" also furthers important life lessons for young children including persistence, perseverance, problem-solving and creativity. What makes you different, makes you special. The Fable of the Snake Named Slim, in the tradition of Aesop's Fables, is a tale of courage, individuality, acceptance, and self-worth. Young readers will be captivated by Slim--who wobbles instead of wiggles Doug Snelson is an award winning children's book author.
