Massive solar flares have taken down the power and communications grid, and rendered most modern means of transportation inoperable. The action takes place in the remote backwoods rather than along the coasts and among islands as in The Pulse, and the main characters are younger, still in their teens.  Mitch Henley and April Gibbs are larger than life, each with different skills that work together to help them survive in the new and dangerous reality they face in the aftermath of the collapse. While their abilities may seem a bit of a stretch, much of the action that takes place is still within the realm of the possible. To me, they evoke my own childhood fantasies as a young hunter and adventurer who spent most of my free time in the woods running wild. Free from the authority of parents, teachers and the institutions of society, Mitch and April are forging a new life out of darkness, but the challenges they and their friends face have never been greater.
