In The Henley Report , Alphonso Henley uncovers the chilling connection between clinical depression and the systemic social injustices that plague America. With a powerful blend of personal narrative, historical insight, and sharp social commentary, Henley explores how deeply entrenched societal conditions—poverty, discrimination, and a broken justice system—fuel the rise of mental health crises across the nation. Henley reveals how the cycle of socio-economic disparity intertwines with mental health struggles, creating a feedback loop that exacerbates the very conditions causing the depression. Drawing from his own life and experiences with systemic injustice, he introduces the term “The American Whitemare,” a poignant metaphor for the dire state of mental health in America. Through an examination of America’s troubled history—beginning with the first transports of the “undesirable” and stretching to the modern-day injustices faced by marginalized groups—Henley sheds light on the enduring impact of inequality on mental health. His unique perspective challenges the status quo, urging readers to question not only the medical approaches to treating depression but also the societal structures that perpetuate it. This book is a call to action, a demand for social change, and a compassionate plea for understanding the intersections of poverty, mental illness, and the quest for justice. Henley’s unflinching honesty and clarity make this a crucial read for anyone seeking to understand the deeper roots of America’s mental health crisis. About the Author: From the Chicago Cabrini-Green homes and the horrors of drugs, crime, murder, and alcohol to Clearwater Beach, just up the road from Tom Cruise, I went from rags to riches, finding and settling for a balanced comfort before I ended up buried in a ditch. My life has been a very interesting journey. I was born in Chicago, Illinois, to a hard Black Panther Party member, bank robber, self-proclaimed gangster named Eugene “Jesse, Silky Smooth, Geno” Henley, a deep Southern Mississippi migrant who escaped to the North to die of a heroin overdose. And, to the delicate and lovely, love everybody Georgiana, who passed away in January 2016, two days before my birthday. I am the second of three children. Eugene Jr. and Linda Faye are my siblings, and I am the “Black Sheep” of my family. I would say I embody a perfect balance of my mother and father. I have my mother’s compassion for humanity and my father's disdain for it. Like my father, I’ve experienced alcohol, drugs, wild women, and parties in many places, along with many setbacks. Like my mother, I’ve encountered religion, the art of caring, hard work, dedication, and an unrelenting love. Even through those “Crack” years. Thank you, mother, for the prayer over my sick vessel in the battle for my mind and soul. You are still a part of me today, just as you were yesterday when you were among us. That’s why I have never truly mourned your passing. Though, I miss your presence, especially our 3:00am phone conversations. I will always love your Soul.
