Clan MacLaren are a relatively small but prominent Scottish Clan who have played an important part in the history of Scotland. From A.D.500 they have helped to develop the emergence of the Scottish Nation. During the Scottish Wars of Independence against England in the late 13th and early 14th Century they supported both William Wallace and King Robert the Bruce. Starting in the Celtic Kingdom of Dalriada on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands they eventually made the area of Strathearn in Perthshire their home. Centred on the township of Balquhidder they made this their main clan lands from around A.D. 850. The MacLaren's were fiercely loyal to the Kings of Scotland and fought and died in many battles to support their monarchs. They fought in most of the important battles in Scottish history. During the Jacobite rebellions of the 18th century they suffered and died for this allegiance. Like all other Scottish Clans they disputed their lands with other clans, fighting many battles with the clans of MacGregor, MacDonald, Buchanan and MacFarlane. Eventually, like many other clans their people left the Highlands of Scotland and helped to populate much of the known world. This book provides a comprehensive account of their history in the context of what was happening nationally in Scotland, Great Britain and later, the wider world.
