Fly tyers and people who love to fish will discover that this is an entertaining book, because it includes large-format full color photos of effective fishing flies. In addition, many of Dale's stories are both funny and educational; these are stories about youngsters growing up on the North Umpqua, and what it was like for a few of Oregon's (mostly unknown) fly fishing pioneers, anglers who were learning to fish waters that today are visited by thousands of people each year. From salmon and steelhead to striped bass and shad, Dale's fly patterns cover all the bases for the tyer and angler, with brilliant photos of nearly 8 dozen of Dale Greenley’s flies. Dale's Honest Flies are tied with the skills earned through decades of personal experience, coaching from peers who have grown up fishing for trout and steelhead since the 1950s. You won't find a hint of self-promotion or commercialism in Dale's craft. His flies are constructed with an insistence on durability and effectiveness. These flies catch fish, and many of the flies photographed for this book were actually fished and chewed-on decades ago! Dale's flies include patterns for steelhead, trout, shad, coho, chinook, striped bass, bluefish, brown trout, and sea-run cutthroat – all are battle-tested – and some still have a snip of Dale’s leader tied to the fly’s eye. Dale’s tying skills are honed to a fine edge over decades, starting in the days when he was a teenager, racing his friends to see who could finish a fly before a rock & roll song on the local radio station ended. Dale tied Adams Parachutes and Royal Coachman Bucktails to supply Orvis , and he supplied Black's Flies in the early years of mail-order catalogs that we received in the mail once each year. And you're sure to enjoy reading one particular little-known story behind an almost-famous story – this one about Governor Tom McCall's North Umpqua steelhead statue. its's true, Dale’s stories and his flies are little known, and this is one of the reasons that I’m honored to produce this modest photo journal to record a little of Dale Greenley fly fishing history – this is Oregon's cultural history, and deserves to be remembered. You can trace a line -- marking the path of Dale's fishing adventures from Dale's home waters on the North Umpqua; - north to the BC saltwater inlets; - then east across the continent to the bluewaters of Cape Cod; - and finally home to Lemolo Lake in Oregon. Dale's fly patterns are all practical, durable, and effective fish-catchers. I hope that you will appreciate the vivid images of Dale’s flies and the stories of Dale’s fishing experiences – just as I do every time I browse these pages. This book is Volume V in my Honest Flies Series – following previous books about the flies of Stan Davis, - Jeff Hunter, - Henry Hoffman, and - Joe Howell. I hope you will enjoy and appreciate the diversity – the elegant simplicity that Dale’s fishing flies add to the patterns you have seen in the first four books in this series. Dale and I, joined by Stan Davis, Jeff Hunter, Henry Hoffman, and Joe Howell …. All of us welcome you. Jay W. Nicholas, December 2021
