Dr. Caffrey teaches his young readers much about the human brain, family life, friendships, and the complexities of the medical and legal fields." — Michael B. Lubbers, Ph.D., Psychologist-Psychoanalyst The bond between horse and rider has always fascinated me. Horses are majestic animals representing power, strength, and loyalty, but they, true to their nature, can also exhibit spirited independence. In a study published in the journal Nature, archaeologists used DNA analysis to trace horse domestication to roughly 2200 BCE—about one thousand years later than previously thought. Across the annals of time, horses and humans have evolved together. Horses have been domesticated and used for many purposes, such as agriculture, competition, and companionship. Although domesticated, wild horses still exist and roam in thundering herds across expanses of the western United States as if to remind us of their autonomous nature. This is the story of the bond between horse and rider, but with an intriguing twist, because the rider is blind. The relationship he forms with his horse is strengthened by mutual dependence and an unbreakable bond. The boy shows remarkable resilience against the odds as he adapts, compensates, and grows with only four of his five senses, but wait. This extraordinary horse completes him as he negotiates the challenges of life as a visually impaired person, as the horse becomes his eyes. Not All Heroes Wear Capes—Some Wear Horseshoes. And Lucy, with her quiet wisdom and loyalty, becomes the eyes he needs to navigate the world. The Horse Who Became My Eyes is an inspiring story about resilience, friendship, and the remarkable connection between a visually impaired rider and the horse who helps him soar.
