The House of the Wolfings is a historical fantasy novel set in a mythical version of early Germanic Europe. Author William Morris blends prose and poetry to tell the story of the Wolfings, a tribe living in the forested Mark. The narrative centers around Thiodolf, the “War-Duke” of the Wolfings, who leads his people in resistance against invading Roman forces. As war looms, Thiodolf struggles with not only his leadership tasks, but also his romantic entanglement with a mystical being known as the Wood-Sun. While Morris may be better known for his advances in art and textile, his fiction was said to inspire future authors such as Lord Dunsany, E. R. Eddison, James Branch Cabell, Sir Henry Newbolt, James Joyce, and even J. R. R. Tolkien. In fact, Tolkien based two characters in his “Hobbit” series off of characters named in Morris’ The Well at the World’s End (the sage Gandolf and the horse Silverfax). Morris was offered the poet laureate in 1891, but turned it down. Black & Gold House of Books strives to provide the best quality literature at a fair price. All of our publications provide the original text, edited for grammar and spelling, with foreign and deprecated words defined in footnotes, a brief author biography, and a list of the author’s other works. Most titles are available in paperback, hardcover and ebook formats.
