However, out at sea in the Atlantic Ocean there was activity that solidified the Americian's independence. The ship, USS Alliance , captianed by John Barry, engaged the British frigate HMS Sybil . Captain Barry skillfully used his seamanship and superior gunnery to damage the British vessel and force it to break off the engagement. The details of the encouonter told in this book in an engaging manner for young readers and anyone interested in a brief vignette of history. The book is fully illustrated to engage young learners. Additional information following the battle at sea is provided and the book includes a poem written by the late H.E.Gillig, that tells the story of the battle. Gillig, was responsible for uncovereing the Alliance's encounter while doing research for America's Bicentenial.
