The Last Rack is the third book in the Streak of Lean series, which is a collection of stories about the author's life growing up in rural southside Virginia on a tenant tobacco farm. The stories present vivid descriptions, in local down-home dialect, of the way of life back in the 1950's, 60's and 70's. A simpler time in many ways but with challenges and situations that made for a hard life. Some of the stories are funny. Some are sad. All are captivating to the reader. In Streak of Lean I tried to introduce you to my family, the farm we sharecropped on, and our simple way of living. In Tobacco Stick , a very unsure young man struggles to find his way in life and is introduced to the game of Pool. He has no way of knowing at the time how much it will influence his whole life in some ways. In Last Rack , school is over, childhood is gone, and the reality of life in the city, and earning money in the pool rooms here and in other area towns, is more of a struggle, and far more dangerous than anything he has encountered before. Buckle up and come enjoy the ride!
