I remember the story of Beowulf as assigned in high school English class, and this memory carried me into the high school of the book. Powerful concepts, powerful imagery, powerful book.. At the beginning, I wasn't quite clear on the connection between the two time periods even though this was described as "A dual timeline novel about the origins of prejudice and cultural exclusion". THEN... OMG!!!! Once I saw how the two stories paralleled each other, I went into a completely different reading mode. Reading this book was an experience; not just two stories in two separate time periods, but rather a lesson in human nature. I only hope that we learn from it... A lifelong New Mexican, Jennifer Bohnhoff loves travel and history, so it should come as no surprise that many of her books are historical novels set in beautiful or interesting places.She taught Middle School Language Arts and New Mexico History for years, but has left to become a full time author.
