A 1986 graduate of West Point, he earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York City. Also a colonel in the U.S. Army, has commanded at the platoon, company, and battalion level with extensive combat and leadership experience in the Balkans, Afghanistan, and as a battalion commander in Iraq.
