Maxwell Jefferson lives alone on the Colorado mountain. He loves the solitude. He built his cabin against the cave behind him that houses a hot spring, and a barn that is just big enough for his stallion and four mules. He has chickens to give him eggs, and he raises a few pigs and steers to butcher in the middle of winter for meat. He has a huge timber wolf that he has raised from a cub that is constantly by his side. Wolf lets him know when anyone approaches him or is near his cabin. The closest town to Max is Wilson Falls. Max doesn’t talk very much to others. He’s very much a recluse, and his size scares the citizens of Wilson Falls to leave him alone. He’s over six foot six. He weighs over two hundred fifty pounds of sheer muscle. The children of Wilson Falls call him the giant, the citizens call him the Mountain Man, and steer clear of him. That’s how Max likes it. He has a few friends…other mountain men, like Crazy Carl, or Mad Mike. He also is a friend to the Sioux Tribe in the area. He saved the life of the chief when he was fighting a huge bear…Max stepped in and killed the bear. The chief counts Max as his brother. Darby Montgomery is a wealthy young lady who is kidnapped and taken away from her father who lives is Denver. She escapes on the train traveling away from her father and ends up running through the wild mountain side. Buzzards are circling her when she is found by the Mountain Man. He nurses her back to health, but he doesn’t know who to trust. Her kidnappers are still out there…someone from inside her father’s house helped them kidnap her. He is beside himself with worry about his daughter, he will pay anything to get her back, but only if he knows that she is alive and well…how can they do that when she has escapes. They have to find her to get the money from her father. Max has to protect her…and he doesn’t know who he can trust. So, he goes back to his own rules…trust no one, he didn’t already know before. But he does promise Darby that he’d get her back to her father safely when this was all over. But by then, does he really want her to leave
