Irv Wiley is an 18-year-old Irish man in the 1700's who has survived famine, disease and the depredations of the occupying British Army in Ireland. His parents are dead and he is the "go-to" man for the rest of the family. When the English rent collector assaults and evicts his female relatives, Irv kills him and has to flee. Strangely, he winds up in the British Army, fights in India and then is sent to America to fight in the 7 Years' War. He meets and befriends George Washington. Irv's cousin and their three comrades make up a fearsome team of soldiers, mentored by an old, archetypal war-horse Sergeant-Major. They eventually join the Americab Army and help Washington win the American Revolution. They are called The Rabble. There is a constant mystical presence around this band of six warriors. They come back after each life, having forgotten previous lives, meet each other again and become re-acquainted, and move on to their next mission. They are only aware of their roles, as agents of an Ultimate Power, when they are de-briefed between lives. Then they forget again when they are re-deployed. This book is the first of the series. The following books put the Rabble in the Civil War Book 2) and in touch with Grant and Lincoln, then the First World War with MacArthur and Conner (Book 3), then the Second World War, with Eisenhower, Marshall and Bradley (Book 4). The fifth book has them in Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War, and the sixth book starts with Desert Storm. They are forever linked with their five women, a righteous and phenomenal crew in their own right. One of the women loves two of them. The mysteries of unseen guidance and unforeseem accomplices keep showing up in their adventures. Their work is never fimished and their souls never die. They are somewhere in our Army today.
