The American English Version (AEV) of the New Testament is a word-for-word translation that expresses the word of God in easy-to-read, yet dignified and reverent American English. This book was written to bring the reader into intimate contact with the undiluted word of God. Americans need the word of God in their mother tongue as much as any remote tribe does, and the AEV addresses this need. First published in 2007, the AEV has undergone five revisions while bearing the same cover design—a burgundy leather-grain look with a band of yellow and orange sunlit clouds at the top. Revision 6, released in 2023, introduced a new cover design, with the centerpiece being an ancient oil lamp. This was chosen because in the New Testament light is symbolic of truth and of Jesus, who said, in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.” Revision 6 also includes improved formatting of the manuscript. The AEV was translated by Vernon S. Mitchell. He graduated with a diploma in Foreign Missions from the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, Illinois, and then obtained a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology (Aviation Option) from LeTourneau College (now University) in Longview, Texas. His career as an aircraft design engineer spanned 41 years and included work on 29 different aircraft. He is married and the father of three daughters. Mr. Mitchell’s passion is to help people understand the Bible and extract practical truths from it. To that end he has created and taught hundreds of Bible studies and has also published the book You Can Be Wise: Wisdom from the Book of Proverbs . Now retired from the aircraft industry, he is determined, so long as health permits, to continue writing Bible studies and books that will help people to understand the Bible and encourage them to live in submissive partnership with the God who inspired it.
