THE NOVEL is a reference work, 340 pages long, consisting mainly of lists of novels and authors, arranged chronologically so as to be of interest to cultural historians as well as friends of literature. The book is sub-divided into a main list that begins with THE TALE OF GENJI and continues up to the present, an introductory essay, an authors' list, a listing of works originally published in more than 30 different foreign languages (all of which have been translated into English), and an "editor's choice" list.
