The Opera Singer's Wife is the story of an extraordinary couple, Alphonso and Caroline Cancelmo. After WWII, Alphonse emigrated from his native Italy to New York City to sing opera professionally and ultimately to become a nightclub entertainer. There he met Caroline Morreale, who was working at the headquarters of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union at the time. Totally smitten, Alphonse courted her relentlessly until she finally agreed to marry him. Upon her retirement, the couple moved to Alphonso's hometown of Atessa, a hill town overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the Province of Abruzzo. Caroline survived her husband and lived on in her adopted country until her death in 2014, a couple of months shy of her 103rd birthday.. In this book of interviews and an essay by her grandniece, Maggie, Caroline talks in detail about the couple's life together in New York and Italy, and of her career as a union activist.
