His life's journey was a testament to his own teachings—a path of intellectual and spiritual exploration that took him from a strict Catholic upbringing in Ireland to becoming a prominent figure in the American self-help and spiritual movements. Born Joseph Denis Murphy on May 20, 1898, in Ballydehob, County Cork, Ireland, he was raised in a devout Roman Catholic family. His father, Denis Murphy, was a headmaster at a private boys' school, a man of broad knowledge who encouraged his son's love of study. Joseph was a brilliant student and was initially guided toward the priesthood, eventually being accepted as a Jesuit seminarian. However, during his late teens, he began to question the rigid Catholic orthodoxy of the Jesuits and decided to leave the seminary. Driven by a desire for new ideas and experiences that he felt he couldn't pursue in Catholic-dominated Ireland, he made the momentous decision to emigrate to the United States. In 1922, Murphy journeyed to America as a steerage passenger aboard the RMS Cedric, sailing from Liverpool to New York. On the ship’s manifest, his occupation was listed as a chemist, a term for a pharmacist in Ireland. He later became a professional pharmacist in New York City. It was during this period that his spiritual journey took a new direction. He attended the Church of the Healing Christ, a part of the Church of Divine Science, where he was influenced by the teachings of Emmet Fox, a key figure in the New Thought movement. It was an experience with healing prayer that ultimately led him to leave his Jesuit training behind and fully embrace a different spiritual path. Murphy’s thirst for knowledge was insatiable. He traveled extensively, enrolling in various universities in the United States and abroad. He was deeply influenced by the philosophical and theological works of Thomas Troward, a judge, philosopher, and professor who became his mentor. Troward's influence introduced Murphy to mysticism and the Masonic order, which he joined and in which he eventually rose to the 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite. In the mid-1940s, Murphy moved to Los Angeles, a hub for the burgeoning New Thought movement. There, he met Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science, who ordained him in 1946. Murphy went on to teach at the Institute of Religious Science. A subsequent meeting with Erwin Gregg, the president of the Divine Science Association, led to his re-ordination into Divine Science. In 1949, Murphy became the minister of the Los Angeles Divine Science Church. Under his leadership,
