In a world of rising seas and rising AI, human evolution takes an unexpected turn Spanning decades of human history and exploring multiple perspectives—from climate scientists and WHO officials to resistance fighters and the AI entities themselves—this epic trilogy examines how humanity might adapt when our technology outpaces our evolution, and our planet can no longer sustain us. FIVE STARS Angela, Goodreads "a great sci-fi read" FIVE STARS Bob Wilkin, Goodreads "It is an amazing read. Mr Edwards was an IT professional. His background shows in his world-building, combining science fiction, dystopian, and thriller genres." "Reading The Quantum Realm Trilogy feels like watching the future unfold before my eyes, both terrifying and inspiring." BOOK NERDECTION EXCELLENT READ RATING Book 1: Unnatural Selection Who will arbitrate our future in a world divided by climate change? It’s 2095, and citizens of the wealthy North enjoy extended life, perhaps forever, thanks to biotech implants called Stem. Quantum computing and AI have converged into thinking machines, Quants, who carry out complex tasks for us. Utopia, or is it? Sophie lives in the South. Her family is relatively wealthy despite living in a society decades behind the North. Her mother dies unexpectedly despite Stem, sending Sophie and her father on a global quest for answers. On the way, they encounter Mackenzie, the daughter of a technology billionaire, and Kazumi, heir apparent to the organisation that created Quants in the first place. It soon becomes clear that the death of her mother was not an isolated incident. Book 2: Inheritance Torn apart by conflict, humanity stands at the brink. The Northern Alliance’s Quant purge is almost complete thanks to bio-engineered soldiers equipped to find and destroy. The Alliance is also keen to put down the rebellion in the South and is engaged in a Cold War with Greater China. Seeing the world falling apart, Mackenzie and Chris seek to escape to the Moon colony. However, the collapse of the Thermashield in Antarctica sends Chris on a desperate mission to avoid a global climate disaster. Sophie still believes there is hope despite being fundamentally altered by her near-death experience with Quants. When the Alliance calls her back to ‘read’ a Scania Quant, she comes to realise a devastating truth: the machines are not done yet. Book 3: Serendipity Evolution or extinction? The answer lies within. Scania Quants rule an Earth recovering from nuclear fallout. Some humans support the enforced utopia, while others do not. The rebels are poised to fight back. For Sophie, Kaz, Mac and the fortunate others who fled to the Moon colonies, life comes with daily challenges for the human body. The Wasting Disease is rife, mortality rates are high, and newborns do not survive. Are we designed for Space? Scania ships appear. Could this be a peace mission? The consequences drive the Lunar High Council to face difficult decisions about the future. Coincidentally, Sophie’s higher level of consciousness uncovers something in the Quantum Realm that may hold the answer to everything. It’s time to go back. I wrote this trilogy of stories whilst on an informal sabbatical from my thirty-plus-year IT career. It took me two years full-time, a bunch of learning, and a good editor to get me there. I have no idea how some people do it part-time while juggling families, jobs, etc. My aim was to paint a picture of a plausible future, extrapolating the most likely scenarios, in my view, for climate change, bio-technology and artificial intelligence. In my career, I was what one might call a contrarian, a sceptic, when my clients sunk millions into major technology choices, and still am. You'll see that here. AI has such a very long way to go, but climate change seems worryingly close, doesn't it? I read mainly science fiction and fantasy, but also like the more fast-paced writing of thrillers. I have written what I like to read. Less high literature and more commercial. Perhaps, through these stories, in some small way, I will move the needle of the collective and bring hope for the future. Please, be entertained, be scared, be inspired by The Quantum Realm Trilogy.
