Debbie Wilson is thirty-one years old; her days full of the joys and obstacles familiar to everyone navigating the American Dream. On the verge of launching her career as a teacher, she is the busy mother to two young boys--and her husband, Chuck, has just left the security of his career in the Navy amidst the economic crisis of 1987. The steady rhythm of her everyday is disrupted one morning when her soapy fingers discover a marble-sized tumor on her left breast. The life Chuck and Debbie Wilson fought so hard to build is turned upside-down as cancer takes the wheel--but little did she know that from that desperate moment in the shower would be birthed one of the best marriage books, biography books and inspirational stories of our decade. She spent the next twenty-eight years resolutely battling one type of cancer after another--including one of the rarest forms of cancer in the world. Chuck and Debbie never set out to become the epitome of ''in sickness and in health,'' but as doctor after doctor told Debbie she was out of options--that neither surgery nor chemotherapy would help--love and faith found a way. Her incredible story spread by word of mouth, and she found herself the inspiration of countless people facing their own battles with cancer. Decades after this miracle love story began, their incredible autobiography is finally in print. Gripping, humorous, heartbreaking and inspiring, this memoir of faith and family tells the true story of how hardship can strengthen--not destroy--a family. When Chuck asked me to read and comment on a pre-published version of his and Debbie's memoir, I couldn't really say no. Mind you, I wanted to. Sure, they had become friends even though I hadn't known them for very long, but I thought the book would be a biography book downer. Either that or filled with too much sentiment and - God forbid! - silly theology Christian book for people broken-hearted enough to believe in anything. But, as I said, they were friends and so I said yes but my heart wasn't really in it. Since it was at the start of my vacation I felt justified in putting it off in favour of a few schlock novels. Chuck, I figured, would understand. But vacations end and so, back at work (the task ahead felt like work to me), I cranked open my electronic version of The Road Home with a sigh and 246 pages I finally closed the file. I simply could not put it down! Written with profound candor, delightful humor, passion and raw but real faith, this intimate exposure to a couple's journey with life challenging cancer is a "must read" for those who would welcome a no holds barred testimony to dread and hope. Clinical detail, diary-like true confession and thoughtful reflection are masterfully held together by a writing style that is much too polished and superbly readable to be a first book! Debbie's faith filled legacy of grace and grit aided and abetted by Chuck's stubborn devotion to his beloved have created both a moving love story and a powerful assertion that cancer never gets the last word on a life that dares to live all the way to the end. Debbie may have put down her pen (typewriter, laptop, tablet, whatever). Let's hope that her Muse will persuade Chuck to open a new file. Fact or fiction, it doesn't matter. Knowing Chuck, he'll show us some truth either way. -The Rev. Dr. W.
