This series of books chronicles the path of the Black Sadler’s of York County, South Carolina from a slave named Tom Sadler and his wife Margaret Brown Sadler through over six generations of his descendants. The series begins with the search for Tom during slavery and the discovery of the white Sadler family that owned him. Tom is then traced from his birth through his liberation in 1865. Tom is first discovered on the 1870 United States Census Records with his wife Margaret and ten of their children, most of whom were born slaves. In order to discover Tom’s whereabouts prior to 1870, the author had to research the white slave owners and hoped to find them in the ownership of a slave named Tom. The task then was to verify that the slave named Tom found in the slave records was the free man named Tom on the 1870 United States Census. Tom’s wife Margaret was researched in the same manner. During the research it was discovered that Tom and Margaret were not owned by the same slave owners and thus it was harder to find Margaret than it was to find Tom. Once Tom and Margaret were discovered and validated, the research continues with the offspring of Tom and Margaret and their descendants. Volume 6 consists of ten Chapters which continues the chronicling of the great grandchildren of Tom and Margaret Brown Sadler. These chapters include the chronicling of the children of; Thomas Jefferson and Purla Simms Sadler, James Arthur Ezekiel and Ida Worthy Sadler, James Arthur Ezekiel and Nancy Mae Lawrence Sadler, John and Dora Brown Sadler, Fred William and Essie Wilson Sadler, Fred William and Bessie Thompson Sadler, and Mattie Sadler and Norris Monroe. Chapters 8-10 consists of placeholder pages directing the reader to Volume 8 in order to view “The Source Bibliography, “The Index of Individuals”, and a section honoring those in the family who served in the United States Military.
