Masha Becker is a young woman who grievously witnesses her family perish in France throughout the duration of the Second World War and finds refuge when she escapes to America. Her hardships and misfortunes encourage her to keep the harsh details of those years locked away in her mind, never to be shared with her growing family for decades. Sixty years later, when Masha is diagnosed with dementia, her neurologist recommends reminiscence therapy as a tool to improve her quality of life. The doctor hopes it will lessen the depression and anxiety he believes are contributing to her increased confusion; the majority of which likely stems from her adamancy to maintain the mystery of the war. With help from her mother’s journals and letters from her past, and eventually her own personal recollections, Masha’s family is able to piece together a timeline of events from the war. The memories she shares with her family will alter the trajectory of their futures, leaving everyone wondering what life would have been like if she hadn’t kept it all a secret for so long.
