He is the hero of this story. Yet Caenos Sillo, an outcast of the inner world whose physical mutation, a second set of eyelids, allows him to walk the surface during the hours of daylight, is perhaps more villain than hero. Strange circumstance has brought into his hands the one weapon, a blade forged from the iron in the blood of all the victims ever slain by violence, that can lay the Devil in his grave for good—the Devil, the true face behind the biblical Satan, who dared rebel against his Maker by committing the first murder, cursed to endless life and endless death, bringing with each rebirth into each new Reality naught save destruction. The Sword of Fate can bring to an end this cycle of annihilation, but it is wielded by a man whose hands are almost as bloody as the Devil’s, one who cares little for anything save himself, a man prone to suicidal depression. The setting of this story is Ka'amaan'sharr, the Fourth World, a world wherein magic exists as commonplace, where justice and survival are won or lost based upon the skill of a warrior and the keenness of his sword, a world wherein dinosaurs and other prehistoric beasts live on as “dragons” or monsters and the geography of the lands and oceans is disarranged, unfamiliar. The Fourth World is our world, before its UnMaking and ReMaking, and this story, inspired in equal parts by mythology (predominantly Native American) and quantum physics—and the eerie similarities existing betwixt the two—relates how this alteration occurs.
