Spokane, Washington-based Kirby Willis is a 20-something personal-finance enthusiast who enjoys driving for Uber as his primary occupation. He also runs a popular blog about "saving money and growing your wealth" and is close friends with another young content creator: Jacob Kidwell, aka "Frugal McDougal." Kirby is shocked when Jacob is found dead in his apartment building, at the bottom of a flight of stairs. He soon learns that Jacob wasn't as well-liked as he thought—and perhaps not very knowledgeable about personal finance. Police detectives Marci Burkett and Quinn Delaney are treating the death as a homicide; Quinn is divorced, with financial problems of his own; Marci is sometimes overly aggressive to compensate for the fact that many people don't take her seriously, due to her short stature. The pair eventually team up with Kirby on the investigation, and it comes to light that Jacob was involved in a potentially lucrative local real estate deal. As the trio delve into what exactly Jacob was up to, they uncover more secrets about the deceased's life. Conway's whodunit includes advice about fiscal responsibility, which one doesn't typically expect in a murder mystery. For instance, Kirby attempts to help Quinn with his money issues by offering tips on budgeting, and asking questions such as "What's your monthly savings rate?"; this gives the narrative a unique flavor, and readers will find themselves invested in how Quinn approaches his seemingly unmanageable debt. Still, some readers may take exception to some of Kirby's pronouncements, such as "College doesn't teach you how to be an entrepreneur." Nonetheless, there's also a murder to solve, and the question of who might have killed Jacob remains intriguing enough to maintain readers' interest. The narrative is aided by the fact that new characters keep entering the picture, and by a subplot in which Marci and Kirby take a shine to each other. An offbeat and often engaging novel in which characters investigate a murder and the dangers of poor financial planning.
