The Roe v.Wade abortion decision in 1973 challenged the faith of Christians. With the U.S. Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriages in 2015, secular America had thrown down the gauntlet as a challenge to the Christian faithful to either bow to the wishes of this brave new world, or to pack it in. Many years after that fateful 2015 decision, the highest court in the land had again taken direct aim at Christians. Their opinion dramatically limiting open worship in American society had nearly brought the American Church to its knees. Will God keep his promises to "never leave or forsake" his people? Rev. Warren Isaac Watts is just one of the pastors across the country who are trying to keep the faith and to serve. His weekly Sunday sermon to an empty, deteriorating sanctuary never changes. A message of hope. A message from the prophecy of Isaiah to God's people Israel. A message that could be heard now, centuries later, by those followers of Jesus who were willing to listen. A message that "the stump of Jesse" was about to grow new life. That the Church was not about to die in America. How does a Christian believer find hope to move ahead and grow in their faith when the majority of the nation seems to be firmly against them? Is The Stump of Jesse just a compelling story, or is it prophecy? What lies ahead for Christians in our country? Wallace W. White is a retired pastor and lives in Delaware, Ohio. He and Carol Jeanne, his wife of 50 years (now deceased), raised their family of two boys and one girl in Piqua, Ohio (where the family attended Grace United Methodist Church). White served as director of the public library there for twenty-two years. He has five grandchildren. A graduate of Miami University with a degree in English, he taught high school English in Marion, Ohio. He holds a Masters in Library Science from Kent State University. He also worked in public libraries in Kent and Mansfield, Ohio. Following his years in public library administration, he worked for a couple years as a newspaper reporter in Delaware. After seminary classes, he was recorded as a Friends pastor and served the Valleyview Evangelical Friends Church for thirteen years. His other two books are Freedom from Lust (iUniverse, 2002), and In Defence of the Letter Double-U (and other engaging insights into the English language), by W. Whoolery White (iUniverse 2014).
