The Western fictional saga of the Moreland family continues in the fourth Western adventure in the Henry Moreland Chronicles--The Texas Ranger’s Last Command. The Moreland family prospers in the great Sierra Valley as western migration continues to California and Nevada in 1859 and 1860. Henry, family, and friends expand their operations in California and reach out to new markets, delivering supplies to Nevada, where great gold and silver strikes have occurred near Carson City, Dayton, and Virginia City. Native unrest is brewing in Nevada as the influx of miners and settlers has disrupted the Paiute and other peoples of the Great Basin. Susan and John Coffee Hays invite Henry, his wife Annie, and Will and Nancy Rollins to visit them at their Oakland, California ranch. They meet William Tecumseh Sherman, Emperor Norton, and Lotta Crabtree at a party at the Hays' estate. Beans Brown, “Dame Shirley,” and Harpoon Louie make an appearance once again. Colonel Hays appears as a prime character in this story. The Moreland visit to the Hays' estate precedes a later meeting in Nevada where Colonel Hays, Henry, Will, and Josh get drawn into the Pyramid Lake War with the Pyramid Lake Paiutes and other natives fed up with their treatment by settlers, miners, and others. Ex-Texas Ranger Hays reluctantly agrees to lead the Washoe Regiment against the Paiute. The story develops Henry’s brother, Brian Moreland, who is becoming more independent and formidable, as demonstrated in incidents against outlaws. Annie Moreland displays her depth of character, emotion, and ability to break horses in this rough and tumble world run by men. Conflicts with outlaws, miners, and natives fill the story with adventure. The appearance of the mysterious Juan Moreno provides intrigue. Finally, the Moreland modern descendants once again reappear, trying to connect with their ancestors. The twelve-year-old twins, Samuel and David, are at it again, looking for more Moreland history.
