Industrial man is enacting a tragedy that must end in self-destruction. His attempt to conquer and control nature is encountering natural limits. His embrace of instrumental rationality subjects him to technological tyranny in the form of multiple complexes that direct his life. His attempt to live without virtue is causing social breakdown. Paradoxically, his urge to transcend nature is driving him toward an Hobbesian state of nature in which life threatens to become ever more solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. For unless he soon mends his ways, humanity is headed for a time of troubles that will cause untold misery and suffering. It is still possible to envision a humane and sustainable alternative that amplifies individual welfare and freedom. But time is short: we must begin now to transition to a simpler and more equal society grounded in psychological and physical reality.
