Caroline and a teenage boy from England named Tommy, meet in a nursing home while visiting their elderly aunts who had become friends while living in London during World War II. Tommy’s aunt, Martha Remington, asks them to bring her to an abandoned train station for a mysterious visit, and later Caroline’s aunt, Emma Radcliff, seeks their help in finding a plane flown by her fiancé that went missing 40 years ago during the Battle of Britain. With the ingenuity of the Marshall family and the logistics of an orienteering club from Sweden, Caroline and Tommy’s search takes them deep into the wooded highlands and then back in time to World War II London where they experience the courage and tenacity of the English citizens during a German air raid, while they work to uncover a spy ring still in operation. Train Tracks Caroline’s and Tommy’s search for railroad tracks and a train station in Woonsocket, Rhode Island are described on pages 17 through twenty-one. This scene was inspired by the author’s walk along both Railroad Street and later High Street. He followed the train tracks which brought him to a train yard used to store and switch railroad cars. You can follow Caroline’s and Tommy’s exploration with pictures of the train track, train yard and train station. Google “Depot Square, Woonsocket RI.” Click on the map and click on Satellite. Open the book to page 17 and follow their adventure. Why Tommy wanted to find the tracks and the station is not revealed until the chapter’s end. Woonsocket Train Station The Woonsocket Depot opened in 1847 and later rebuilt in 1882 to become the “finest local station in New England” picking up and dropping off passengers on the New York New Haven and Providence and Worcester railroads until 1960 when it closed. This coincided with the mills closing and the general financial decline in the area. In 1970 the building was damaged by a fire and later purchased by the Develco real estate company to rehab as their headquarters. Develco was responsible for developing the Lincoln Mall in Lincoln, RI. The Queen-Anne style train station has been fully renovated and now houses Rhode Island Department of Transportation and Blackstone Valley Polar Express staff. The train station was the backdrop to the 2009 Movie “Hachi, A Dog’s Tale,” featuring Richard Gere.
