Ludo Welffens has dedicated four decades of his career in human development, contributing to social change theory, understanding the causes of the weakening social fabric particularly in most Sub-Saharan African countries calling for a much more relevant typology of situations, at times when the heritage of the past, from civil wars to dysfunctions of the justice mechanisms, is, at best, prudently dealt-with by key local actors and all stakeholders, including the international community. In this book inspired by draft notes for a Guest Lecture in March 2010, CADES (Cultures and Development Studies) Masters Program of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Institute for Anthropological Research in Africa (IARA), Ludo shares his perspectives on the paradigms used to build and perfect the United Nations Organization (UNO) systems over the past 65 years. Telling the story, as it were, is fundamental to the survival and transformation of the UNO. A far better understanding of the nature of the obstacles to non-violent social change in today’s world is needed. Without that, conceptualizing and building a “relevant” 3rd generation UN – after the League of Nations and the UNO – is impossible. Available sociological and anthropological research findings have not been used sufficiently to impact on the way a “United Nations Organization” can and should function, evolve, let alone radically reform itself. We share here our views on how to depart from the complex systems-heritage of the past half-century. We discover that it leads us to the core elements of a phenomenology of failed development.

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
