Includes a traditional Crucian Vienna cake recipe. Charlene Abramson Joseph was born in New York City of parents from the US Virgin Islands. At age twelve, the family returned to St. Croix. She began writing poetry and plays in high school, but it was at the former Georgian Court College that she realized she was a writer. She served the Virgin Islands Department of Education as a teacher, an English department chair, and a district language arts coordinator. She contributed to numerous language arts curriculums and publications and created stories and shared them during her workshops and presentations. She holds a MEd from the University of Southern Mississippi and is a graduate of the Institute of Children s Literature and a fellow of Virgin Islands Writing Project. In 2012, her poem Born Crucian was published in volume 26 of The Caribbean Writer and won the 2013 Marguerite Cobb McKay Prize. Charlene is married to Wayne Joseph and has three adult children, Shanarae, Salihah, and Travis, and three grandchildren, Maakheru, Ne lani, and Onile. She splits her time between Louisiana and St. Croix.
